Difficult Family Dynamics

Family can be complicated in ways that are hard to explain. Sometimes staying connected takes everything you’ve got.

You might be here because…

  • You feel like you’re constantly walking on eggshells, carefully choosing every word so you don't trigger a reaction.

  • You find yourself moving backwards when you’re around your family, slipping back into habits and reactions you thought you’d outgrown.

  • You feel like the “difficult one” when you speak up, set a boundary, or do things differently than them.

  • You’re trying to stay connected to your family without losing yourself or your peace of mind in the process.

What we'll explore

The roles we learn in our families don't disappear just because we grow up. We'll unpack the physical reaction to seeing their name pop up on your phone, the strategic planning before a holiday dinner, and the mental debrief on the drive home.

Therapy is a space for all of it: wanting closeness and dreading it in the same breath, the anxious replay of every conversation, and the exhaustion of being the one doing the emotional heavy lifting. We'll look at how you learned to show up in your family, how those patterns are still shaping you today, and what you're ready to change.

I understand that family problems aren't always as simple as “set a boundary” or “just let it go.” Sometimes culture, family loyalty, or unspoken rules can make doing what's healthy feel like doing something wrong. This is exactly the kind of complicated I'm here for. There's no right way to do family, so I won't tell you what yours should look like. I will help you make sense of what's happening, figure out what you need, and work on building healthier relationships without asking you to abandon yourself in the process.
